Enhancing Student Learning Experiences through Pedagogical Innovation at JOOUST
Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST), through its Centre for Academic Development and Career Services, hosted a dynamic training workshop for lecturers aimed at enhancing student learning experiences. The initiative reflects the University’s continued commitment to academic excellence and transformative teaching practices.
The training was officially opened by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Emily Akuno, who underscored the importance of continuous professional development for faculty. She reiterated that such training activities are essential in strengthening lecturers’ performance and ultimately improving the quality of education delivered to students. In her remarks, the founding coordinator, Dr. Ruth Otienoh highlighted the Centre’s vital role in academic support, disability services, industrial linkages, and career development. The current coordinator, Prof. Charles Omoke, underscored the need for continuous staff capacity building to align with the components of the CBE curriculum and addressing the disconnect between lecturers and students
The workshop was facilitated by Prof. Jane Rarieya from Aga Khan University, an expert in higher education pedagogy. She led engaging sessions that challenged lecturers to rethink and refine their teaching approaches.
One of the key sessions, “Having Compass: Developing Graduate Attributes,” encouraged participants to reflect on the qualities they aim to instill in their graduates. Prof. Rarieya emphasized the importance of clearly defining these attributes and aligning teaching strategies to ensure students acquire relevant competencies for the evolving global landscape.
In another session on “Being Student-Focused,” she highlighted the principles of effective teaching and learning. The discussion centered on creating inclusive, engaging, and responsive learning environments that prioritize student needs and active participation.
The training concluded with a thought-provoking session on “Why We Should Treat Students as Partners.” Here, Prof. Rarieya advocated for a shift from traditional hierarchical teaching models to more collaborative approaches, where students are actively involved in the learning process as co-creators of knowledge.
Overall, the workshop provided a valuable platform for lecturers to share insights, build capacity, and adopt innovative teaching practices. As JOOUST continues to invest in such initiatives, the University reinforces its mission to deliver high-quality education and produce well-rounded graduates equipped for the future.
