Fanning flames of digital empowerment on JOOUST students
In a bid to ignite the spark of digital empowerment among the students of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST), the Ajira Digital Team embarked on a Digital Awareness Campaign in JOOUST on the 29th of September, 2023. The Ajira Digital Program is a government initiative driven by the Ministry of ICT, Innovations, and Youth Affairs whose overarching goals include raising the profile of digital work, promoting a mentorship and collaborative learning approach to finding digital work, providing Kenyans with access to digital work, and positioning Kenya as a global destination for online workers.
The awareness campaign was as a result of Ajira’s collaborative engagement with the Dean of Student's Office, aimed at shedding light on the existence of the Ajira Club and the multitude of benefits awaiting member students.
The Ajira Digital Team's visit commenced with a courtesy call on the Dean of Student's Office, Professor Christopher Obel Gor, with whom they discussed the mission of the Ajira Digital Program. Their unrelenting commitment to empowering Kenyan youth with digital job opportunities was evident even as the team leader, Mr. Simon outlined their objectives for the day. Thereafter, the team proceeded to the Assembly Hall, where they set up their station and eagerly awaited the opportunity to engage with JOOUST students.
The event was nothing short of vibrant, with a plethora of activities lined up to keep the students occupied. One notable activity that drew the attention of students was a concurrent golf game, which added a unique touch to the registration process. This innovative approach endeared the students and motivated them all the more to invite their comrades.
To crown it all, the team unveiled the numerous opportunities that the Ajira Digital Program offers to students. The courses, which have both physical and virtual sessions and shall be administered free of charge, encompass a wide range of programs namely; Digital Marketing and E-commerce (basic module), transcription, data entry, virtual assistance, content writing, and much more. What sets these courses apart is their level of flexibility which allows students to earn while pursuing their studies.
One of the key takeaways from the event was the announcement of physical training sessions to be conducted at JOOUST between the 12th and 13th of October, 2023. This initiative serves as a testament to the commitment of Ajira Digital Team to ensure that students have access to the resources and knowledge they need to thrive in the digital space.
The Ajira Digital Team's visit to the University was an inspirational and educational experience for both the team and the students. This initiative promises a lot of opportunities for the Youth even as the country continues to position itself as a hub for digital innovation.
