Empowering the Next Generation of Innovators at Turbo Girls Secondary School
On 16th April 2025, the JOOUST ENGAGE team proudly participated in the 16th Annual Education and Leadership Development Congress held at Turbo Girls Secondary School in Eldoret. The event, convened by Equity Group Foundation in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Mastercard Foundation, brought together Wings to Fly and Elimu scholars for an inspiring two-day leadership experience under the theme “The Innovation Generation: Igniting Ideas, Creating Impact.”
Representing JOOUST at the event were Dr. Esther Osir, the ENGAGE Regional Coordinator, and Dr. Erick Ogola, a trainer with the program. The duo delivered a dynamic two-hour session introducing high school scholars to Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Science through engaging, real-world examples and relatable technology—TikTok, Instagram, Google, and facial recognition apps.
The presentation spotlighted how AI is transforming key sectors such as public health, agriculture, education, and environmental conservation. Most notably, students learned how AI can be harnessed for social good—from predicting diseases and personalizing learning, to supporting climate action through drone-assisted tree planting.
At the heart of the session was the ENGAGE Project, a national initiative that empowers young women from disadvantaged backgrounds with coding, data analysis, and AI skills to address real-life public health problems. Scholars were introduced to the project’s structure, tiers of eligibility, and the upcoming call for applications expected in May 2025. The JOOUST team emphasized its regional recruitment role for Western Kenya and promised a customized flyer and application guide once the call goes live.
Student enthusiasm was palpable. Many asked insightful questions, expressed strong interest in STEM careers, and requested to be updated on how to apply. Teachers and Equity mentors echoed the need for further outreach and sensitization in their schools.
JOOUST commends Equity Group Foundation for the opportunity to reach out to future STEM leaders and remains committed to building equitable access to AI education in Western Kenya.
