In a heartwarming demonstration of compassion and global partnership, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) joined hands with Florida-based non-profit organization Chair-The-Love to donate 140 wheelchairs to persons with physical disabilities. The two-day distribution event took place on June 10th at JOOUST Main Campus in Siaya County and on June 11th at Kisumu Social Hall and JOOUST Kisumu Campus.

The partnership marks a significant milestone for both institutions, with JOOUST becoming the latest Kenyan university to collaborate with Chair-The-Love. The organization, which channels support from well-wishers around the world, focuses on restoring dignity and independence to people with physical disabilities by donating mobility aids. Although their operations only expanded to Africa in 2023, Kenya has now benefited from three major donations , the latest made possible through the dedicated efforts of Profs. Fred and Catherine Amimo.

Speaking during the Kisumu event, Chair-The-Love Board Chair Mr. Augie Byllott expressed his gratitude for the growing partnership.

- “We are thrilled to continue our work in Kenya alongside JOOUST, the University of Eastern Africa–Baraton, and the counties of Kisumu and Siaya. These wheelchairs are not just gifts — they’re tools that restore freedom and dignity,” he said.

The Kisumu ceremony was graced by the Governor of Kisumu County, His Excellency Prof. Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o, the First Lady of Kisumu County, and JOOUST Vice Chancellor, Prof. Emilly Akuno. In her remarks, Prof. Akuno described the event as a blessing for all involved, underscoring JOOUST's commitment to supporting vulnerable communities.

- “This partnership reflects our mission to build a society where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. It is a joy to witness lives being transformed through such a simple, yet profound gesture,” she said.

Prof. Charles Makori Omoke, head of the Disability Support Services Unit at JOOUST, also reminded beneficiaries that they are seen, valued, and supported.

-“Education goes beyond textbooks and lecture halls. It is found in the actions we take to uplift those around us. This is education in action,” he noted in his opening remarks.

Governor Nyong’o applauded the initiative and announced his administration’s intention to explore a long-term partnership that could see wheelchair donations become an annual event in Kisumu County.

Among the joyful recipients were school children from Nyamonye Small Home and other local residents, many of whom shared their excitement and gratitude. For most, the wheelchairs offered not just mobility, but a renewed sense of freedom and inclusion.

As JOOUST continues to foster meaningful partnerships that drive positive change, this collaboration with Chair-The-Love stands as a testament to what is possible when compassion meets action.
