JOOUST Deans, Directors, and CODs retreat for quality leadership and management.
The University Management Board members, along with Directors, Deans, and Chairpersons of Departments (CODs) from Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology, participated in a three-day retreat at Midland Hotel in Nakuru town. This retreat took place from August 15th to 18th, 2023, and was sponsored by the Center for Excellence in Sustainable Use of Insects for Food and Feeds (INSEFOODS). The primary goal of the retreat was to enhance the leadership and management skills of the academic staff.
The recent gathering of academic leaders for a bonding session was graced by Prof. Joseph Bosire, the Acting Vice-Chancellor. In his opening speech, Prof. Bosire encouraged the faculty members to contemplate the University's achievements thus far. He also urged them to boldly provide suggestions for areas that require improvement, with the ultimate goal of enhancing the University's quality. Additionally, he emphasized the significance of the faculty's conduct within the University, stating that their actions set an example for the entire community. He referred to the deans and directors as influential figures within the University, implying that their actions shape the University's culture and are observed by others.
The Keynote speaker for the occasion, Prof. James K. Tuitoek, a former Vice-Chancellor of Egerton University, and a long-serving public servant challenged the retreaters to look at themselves and their faculties as the embodiment of the Institution’s Values, Vision and Mission. Prof. Tuitoek challenged the Deans to be in control of their schools and give direction by having a strategic plan for the school which must be in line with the university’s strategic goals. Dr. Ken Mutuma a legal expert took the leaders through Ethical Leadership and Integrity in Public Service.
During the retreat session, various other presenters delivered informative talks. For instance, Prof. Aggrey Thuo (DVC PAF) provided insights to the faculty members about the significance of Planning in Enhancing Standards. Prof. Darius Andika (Director INSEFOODS) discussed Program Development and Review in alignment with global trends, Commission for University Education standards, international partnerships, and shared programs. Prof. Silvance Abeka (Director CfEL) shed light on E-learning and its associated opportunities. Prof. Solomon Ogara (Dean SIIS) addressed the topic of Artificial Intelligence and the accompanying challenges. Prof. Christopher Gor (Dean of Students) shared insights about the University student community and its implications for teaching and welfare support. Prof. Julius Manyala (Director BPS) elaborated on strategies for promoting research in schools within the context of Postgraduate research and training. Prof. Pamela Raburu (Director QEA) delved into the realm of Examination processing. Ms. Keziah Ogada (CCO) focused on Social media and responsible management of information, while Dr. Walter Akuno (Registrar ASAR) tackled the management of the university curriculum, examinations, and Competency-Based Education.
During a team-building retreat guided by Mr Duncan Juma, the participants learned valuable leadership techniques through engaging in physical exercises. The team comprehended the concepts of effective leadership by actively participating in various activities such as songs and dances. Prof. Monica Ayieko, the Principal Investigator of INSEFOODS, urged the attendees to purposefully apply the knowledge they gained. She emphasized the importance of turning discussions and decisions into tangible actions, ensuring that they result in meaningful outcomes rather than mere statements.
